Re: Sir Chris Chope MP blocking FGM bill today
Sir Christopher Chope has yet again blocked the FGM bill today by shouting ‘object’. The private members bill introduced by cross-bencher Lord Berkley and supported by FGM campaigners such as Nimco Ali, has already been blocked by Chope once before. The bill itself gives greater powers for authorities to act on cases of FGM and provide better protection for those who are most vulnerable.
We at Christchurch Labour Party absolutely oppose Chope’s decision to block this bill once again and say that enough is enough, and call on the Tories to withdraw the whip for his continuing disgraceful behaviour that cannot represent the views of his constituents, nor the country.
His argument for blocking this bill is that the PMBs lack proper scrutiny, attempting to claim that his objection is based on ‘principle’. Unfortunately, what he fails to inform the public is that the bill itself would be properly scrutinised and debated through a committee stage, report stage and a third reading if it was able to progress through Parliament.
His ‘principles’ on PMBs don’t extend to fellow Conservative Peter Bone, whose bills he didn’t object to, and two of his own bills which were due to be read today, one on value added tax and the other on HS2 phase one. Last year, he camped outside Parliament to put 72 of his own PMBs through Parliament.
We at Christchurch Labour Party condemn this use of Parliamentary procedure for his ill-judged ‘principles’, and we specifically ask the local Conservative Party in Christchurch what they intend to do about their MP who is so obviously out of touch with reality, and is now endangering the safety of children most at risk of harm and abuse in the process.
Andrew Dunne, Chair of Christchurch Labour Party, said:
“Sir Chris Chope is a disgrace, and does not represent the views of the many local families and residents I know and speak to regularly.
He shames our constituency, and is enforcing a reputation that we do not want, nor deserve, and to think he was given a knighthood by Theresa May last year.
I want to know what the Christchurch Conservatives think about this behaviour, and what they are going to do about their MP, so obviously out of touch with reality, and who is a continual source of embarrassment to us all”.
